Winter Weather Safety
So you are getting ready for cooler temperatures and Michigan's never-ending Winter weather to start so that you can get back to the myriad of outdoor activities that make living in Michigan so great. But, did you know, that cold weather also poses serious risks to our pet family's health? A host of potential dangerous from freezing temperatures to icy conditions can lead to pet illnesses like frostbite or hypothermia. Learn how to keep your pet safe this season!
Keep Your Pets Safe in Cold Weather
Know the Limits
Just like people, some pets' cold tolerance can vary based on their breed, coat, body fat, activity level, and general overall health. Very young or very old pets may be more susceptible to cold and may have more trouble walking on snow and ice or be at risk of falls. Pets with chronic diseases like diabetes or kidney disease cannot regulate their own body temperature. Know the limits for your individual pets.
Stay Inside
Cats and Dogs should be kept indoors during cold weather. Despite old beliefs, our pets are susceptible to the same cold weather conditions as we are. Some pets such as long-haired or thick-coated dog breeds may be more tolerant of cold weather but even then, no pet should be left outside during below freezing temperatures!
Make Some Noise
A warm vehicle can be an appealing source of heat for outdoor and feral cats. Check underneath your hood or honk the horn before starting the engine to encourage feline friends to abandon their roost.
Prevent Poisoning
Automobile antifreeze, road salt, de-icers and other treatments that us humans apply to our environment and cars are toxic and deadly to our pets! Clean up any spills quickly, keep containers of toxic substances away from pet areas, and thoroughly wipe paws after outdoor adventures. Learn more about toxic chemical exposure here.
